James Berglund began his legal career as a Deputy District Attorney in Santa Clara County. He quickly rose from trying misdemeanor cases to trying serious felonies including complex gang related cases, homicides and manslaughter trials. He also handled numerous white collar crimes and fraud cases as a prosecutor.

Experienced Prosecutor

After three years in the Santa Clara District Attorney’s office, he became an Assistant District Attorney in Santa Cruz County. He remained there for the next ten years, during which time he served as the co-prosecutor in the notorious “Trailside Killer” or “Mt. Tam Killer” case. The defendant was convicted during a change of venue trial in Los Angeles with the capital murder of two people in Santa Cruz County. After a two year trial, the defendant was sentenced to death.

While in Santa Cruz, Mr. Berglund served as Municipal Court Supervisor and taught the young deputy district attorneys how to try drunken driving cases. For two years, he was also the sole prosecutor for all child molestation cases filed in Santa Cruz County.

Butte County Criminal Defense Representation

In 1989, Mr. Berglund moved to Butte County and worked briefly in the Butte County District Attorney’s Office before going into private practice in 1990. Since entering private practice, Mr. Berglund has defended literally hundreds of serious criminal cases. He was co-counsel in the last capital murder case brought in Butte County. Mr. Berglund has represented clients involved with such criminal actions as murder, white collar crimes, alleged fraud, robbery, child molest, drug sales, assault, domestic violence, rape, vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence.
