Career Beginnings

James B. Berglund graduated from the University of California at Davis with high honors. Three years later, he graduated from the University of Santa Clara School of Law with honors. In 1977, Mr. Berglund became a deputy district attorney at the Santa Clara District Attorney’s office. While there, he successfully prosecuted a number of serious felony cases, including homicides, serious gang-related assaults and complex white-collar crimes.

Accomplishments in the Santa Cruz District Attorney’s Office
Mr. Berglund served as an assistant district attorney in the Santa Cruz District Attorney’s office between 1980 and 1989. While there, he and the district attorney successfully prosecuted the notorious “Trailside Killer" for the shooting death of two hikers in Santa Cruz County. This change of venue case took place in the Los Angeles Supreme Court and lasted for nearly two years.
Mr. Berglund served in many other roles during his time at the Santa Cruz District Attorney’s office. He served as the lone child sexual assault prosecutor for two years. As a municipal court supervisor, he taught young deputy district attorneys how to conduct DUI trials. He prosecuted a large number of environmental crimes, fish and game cases. He was also appointed to the Santa Cruz County Fish and Game Commission and served for a number of years.
Serving Northern California
In 1999, Mr. Berglund moved to Butte County and spent a short time in the district attorney’s office. He began his private practice in April of 1990 and has been heavily involved in both civil and criminal cases ever since. Mr. Berglund represented the defendant in the most-recent Butte County death penalty case. He has also tried a number of cases involving child sexual assault, driving under the influence and aggravated assault with a firearm.
Mr. Berglund has also enjoyed a very active civil litigation practice of representing plaintiffs in civil cases. For nine years, he was employed as trial counsel by a Northern California medical malpractice insurance carrier to represent doctor’s medical malpractice cases.
As a civil attorney, Mr. Berglund has achieved some of the largest jury verdicts in the North State against such defendants as Wal-Mart and other defendants represented by some of the largest American insurance companies.
Tough Representation
Mr. Berglund believes getting a good settlement for his client involves letting the opposition know that they are in for a tough and costly fight. Because of his determination and dedication, the vast majority of Mr. Berglund’s cases settle in a very favorable fashion.*
